According to Buddhism, a person can reach Nirvana, or the highest state of enlightenment, through continuous mindfulness and meditation. As practiced by Buddhist monks and practitioners, mindfulness and meditation has become a spiritual tool and health-booster. More than just the chants and postures, mindfulness and meditation are about proper breathing, focused attention, and concentration of one’s thoughts. As a health and spiritual practice, mindfulness and meditation came into prominence centuries ago.
The Basics of Meditation
Meditation is the practice of creating a state of mind that leads to inner peace, self-fulfillment, self-improvement, and the development of a positive outlook in life. There are two types of meditation: the concentrative and the mindfulness types. Concentrative meditation focuses on the individual’s concentration, sitting quietly and calmly with good breathing patterns. It is said that one's mind is somewhat connected to one’s breath of air. Continuous rhythm of inhales and exhales of the breath will make the individual feel calm and relaxed. This can be achieved by focusing on the steady flow of air in and out of the lungs. This will result in the mind being more aware and tranquil at the same time.
The Basics of Mindfulness
Mindfulness, on the other hand, involves a focused attention and awareness on passing waves of sensations, images, feelings, thoughts, sounds, and smells; anything that the body interacts with or experiences. This in turn will give the individual a more non-reactive mind state, much like watching television. The practice of mindfulness, or being in a state of awareness, allows the individual to break free from the constant barrage of thoughts, those to-do list items, all the many appointments, and other stressors we have, and make way to ease a racing mind.

Healing Benefits of Mindfulness and Meditation
Meditation and relaxation often go hand in hand. In scientific studies, it has been proven that there are health benefits in regularly practicing mindfulness and meditation. By being in a relaxed state of mind, the individual is also regarded as being in an alpha state, which is a level of consciousness that promotes healing. Since people are always on the go, being in a state of relaxation and stillness can enhance our overall well-being.
Indeed, mindfulness and meditation is a unique philosophy, practiced for centuries, that has been proven to offer physical, emotional, and spiritual healing benefits. In practicing mindfulness and meditation, one can see their innermost self at its fullest. This can help an individual dealing with external difficulties to see past all the challenges and become calmer when dealing with difficult situations. It can also help an individual overcome past trauma or pain and give them the strength to persevere. This ancient practice can also help relieve headaches, stress, and anxiety.
