🎬Vlog Post | Mind of a Champion (Brain Power Vlog Series)


How many times have you heard a true champion speak with self-doubt? Have you ever heard a star athlete say, “It will be a tough game, but we will just have to wait and see how it all works out?” You’ve likely never heard this type of wait-and-see attitude from our star athletes because doubt will knock you out before you even begin.


The athletes that are often remembered are those that performed memorably during times of pressure. I say memorably because they could be remembered for choking at the last second or rising to the occasion to bring their team to victory. Anyone who has played competitive sports knows that there is a different feeling during a play-off game, but as with all things in life, that pressure by itself is not a bad thing, it is all in the way you handle it.


Michael Jordan famously led the Chicago Bulls to 6 NBA Championships from 1991-1998, and was named the Most Valuable Player in each of those championship runs. While he was a huge star in his own right, he also recognized his own weaknesses, learned from them, and ultimately used them to his advantage to improve his game. Jordan once famously said,

I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life, and that is why I succeed.


In those moments of pressure, Jordan could either worry that he isn’t good enough to take that shot, or he could believe in himself and his incredible talents and abilities to make the winning play happen. To be as successful as he was in his NBA career, he must have turned his self-doubt into self-belief.

If you let self-doubt enter your mind, anxiety is sure to grow. Once you start to doubt whether you are capable of winning, you’re on your way to disaster because the mind cannot hold two contradictory thoughts at the same time. You are either thinking of winning, and visualizing what winning will be like, or you are worrying about how to win and what will happen if you don’t win. Once that doubt creeps in, your belief in your ability to perform, let alone win, becomes extremely difficult.


Where focus goes, every flows. That means that whatever the mind sees, feels, and thinks, it works toward. The mind merely needs to be given direction and then it works toward making that given destination a reality. The mind is constantly working towards results and when we focus on our goals, we can absolutely make them a reality. The trouble happens when we don’t give our mind direction or focus. When you learn how to control your mind, greatness is achievable. Learning how to think like a winner is the first step towards becoming a winner.

Some people say you cannot control what comes into your mind, but with the proper training… you can. Regardless of whether or not you can control what thoughts enter your mind, you can definitely control how long you hold onto a thought. When a negative or disempowering thought pops up, you can simply acknowledge it, and then let it go. This makes space for more empowering and positive thinking.

When self-doubt does happen – and it will - clear out your mind with a flood of positive images. Focus on what you want, not on what you don’t want. Focus on winning, not on not losing. Begin to daydream and envision your ideal outcome. Train your mind to focus on the positive.
