Pursuing Your Dreams Blog Series

Photographs are clearer when they are in focus. When they are out of focus, they are blurry and indistinct. Faces or objects are blurred, maybe even unrecognizable. Delete that one; a poor quality picture that does not meet the image you had in mind when you took it. Scratch it up to experience. Maybe blame it on the camera.



How many times have you been disappointed by the result when your focus was off? The quality of the pictures, or your circumstances, that show up in your life are also largely due to proper focus. 2 Steps to Achieving Your Dreams 1. Picture What You Want When it comes to going after your dreams, first the idea – your objective, desires, passion, etc. - must be clearly held in your mind. The result you desire to manifest in your life must first be clearly and distinctly created in your imagination. It must be ‘in focus’ – that is, the components must be defined, clearly seen, and envisioned in your mind. 2. Remain Focused on that Image Secondly, as you go about taking steps to adjust the picture, you must remain focused on your goal and not allow yourself to get distracted by what is going on around you. Sounds simple really, but it always amazes me how unfocused or undecided. Ask someone to describe their heart’s desire and 90% of the time, you cannot get a clear description from them. It is blurry and indistinct. Generalities but no specifics. Or a description of the picture by describing what’s not in it.

What do you do if you don’t already know what you want? If you don’t already know what your dreams are, you are not alone. Surprisingly, many people don’t know what it is that they really want in life. We are conditioned from childhood to act, think, and behave in a manner that is acceptable by our caretakers, friends and family, religious organizations, teachers, and other societal influences. With all of the pressures to fit in or rather, not make yourself stand out by being different, you have repressed a part of you that you weren’t able to fully explore or develop. This is why so many people feel unfulfilled or stuck in life. They go about their business conforming to society because they think it’s the easy thing to do. Well, let me tell you from experience, it’s more difficult to continue living a lie than by becoming your true self. When you are not living your dreams and allowing yourself to shine brightly in your own beautiful and unique ways, you are doing yourself and the world a disservice. When you start living your dreams, life becomes more meaningful and you are better equipped to handle difficult situations, keep your emotions under control, and fuel your own passion to stay motivated to live your purpose.

One of the easiest, and most effective ways to discover what it is that you want, is by asking yourself what you don’t want. This is very effective because most people seem to know what they do NOT want. Once you’ve defined what you do want, through the process of outlining the things in your life you don’t want, then, you will want to clearly define your objective, doing so from an abundance mindset. Focus your attention and intentions on those ideals that you want, desire, long for, and thirst for. Make that focus clear and distinct. See sample exercise below.


Defining Your Dreams from an Abundant Mindset

What I DON’T Want What I DO Want To feel tired and run down I want to be healthy Living paycheck-to-paycheck I want to be wealthy Dreading getting up in the morning I want to be happy No more suffering I want peace


Objective: I want health, wealth, happiness, and peace.


What does health mean to you?

Fixed Mindset: You know, to not be sick.

Abundant Mindset: To feel my best and make good choices when it comes to my body.


What does wealth mean to you?

Fixed Mindset: Well, to not be lacking.

Abundant Mindset: To have all my basic needs met, a close family, and love in my life.


What does happiness mean to you?

Fixed Mindset: To not be sad or dissatisfied.

Abundant Mindset: To find joy in the little things and appreciate all that I have.


What does peace mean to you?

Fixed Mindset: To have no more war.

Abundant Mindset: To live in a world that can civilly work out any grievances and help one another in times of need.


Creating goals from the perspective of an abundance mindset is critical to helping you attain your desired outcome. The trouble with focusing on ‘no more war’ is that you are still focusing on war. The trouble with focusing on not being unwell is that you are still focusing on un-wellness, not being well. The focus is on lack and limitation and not on abundance and potential.

Losing Focus

How clear and exact are your ideals? How much desire, longing, passion is attached to them? How focused is the image in your mind? How focused is your desire to have it manifest in your life? The complex thing about life is that it is wonderfully full of distractions. Here you are, focused on some purpose or goal and then this incredibly intrusive thing occurs.


Perhaps, you are in medical school, focused on becoming a doctor. Then this great guy shows up, and before you know it, you are married and at home practicing motherhood instead of medicine and taking your child to the pediatrician that you could have been, had you not allowed yourself to be distracted, to lose focus on the dream to become a doctor. Your priorities changed and now your focus is elsewhere.


Or perhaps, you are busy going about creating a new business and some seemingly major obstacle presents itself, so you change your mind, change your plan, change your focus to the next great business idea and the next one after that. Life is full of distractions making it easy to lose focus.


Take Action to Regain Focus

Keep in mind that it’s okay to lose focus now and then. It’s okay to have a major distraction take you off course, but the important thing to remember is that you can always get your focus back. All it takes is one step towards making your goals happen, and it’s like a snowball effect. One tiny step leads to another, to another. Next thing you know, you’re starting your first day as an attending physician or you’ve made your first million as a business-owner. Anything is possible when you have focus!
